El Bloomsday es un evento anual que se celebra en honor a Leopold Bloom, personaje principal de la novela Ulises de James Joyce. Se celebra todos los 16 de junio desde 1954.

El 16 de junio es el día en el que transcurre la acción -ficticia- del Ulises. Este día los celebrantes procuran comer y cenar lo mismo que los protagonistas de la obra, o realizar distintos actos que tengan su paralelismo en la novela. Especialmente se realizan encuentros en Dublín para seguir el itinerario exacto de la acción.

El martes 16 de junio a las 19hs se realizará en el Salón Dorado de la Municipalidad, la presentación del Bloomsday en Buenos Aires.

Personalidades de la cultura local harán lectura de un capítulo del Ulises, de James Joyce, considerada una de las mejores novelas del siglo XX. Los lectores serán la locutora y ahora diputada Lidia Satragno (Pinky); la Prof. María Kodama, presidenta de la Fundación Borges; y Pacho O´Donnell, escritor y psiquiatra. Presentará Carlos Gamerro.

Organiza la Embajada de Irlanda, la Asociación Argentino Irlandesa de Capital Federal y el Gobierno de la Ciudad.

En todo el mundo en este día se hacen celebraciones muy originales para celebrar el Ulises de James Joyce (todo el libro transcurre en un mismo día en la ciudad de Dublín).

Bloomsday, literalmente “el día de Bloom”, recrea la jornada del 16 de junio en la novela del reconocido escritor irlandés: representaciones en las calles, paseos guiados, lecturas colectivas.

El Ulises es, sin lugar a dudas, una de las obras emblemáticas del siglo XX.


* Sobre James Joyce.

James Joyce (Dublín, 1882 – Zúrich, 1941) fue un escritor irlandés, recordado mundialmente como uno de los más importantes e influyentes del siglo XX.

Es aclamado por su obra maestra, Ulises (1922).

Uno de sus cuentos vincula a Dublín con Buenos Aires (“Evelyn” en Dublinenses): una joven irlandesa abandona la idea de partir con un marinero que viene a esa ciudad.

Jorge Luis Borges escribió: “Es indiscutible que Joyce es uno de los primeros escritores de nuestro tiempo. Verbalmente, es quizá el primero. En el Ulises hay sentencias, hay párrafos, que no son inferiores a los más ilustres de Shakespeare…”

Irish Soldiers and Military Conflicts in Spain, Latin America and the Caribbean

The editors of Irish Migration Studies in Latin America invite submissions for a special issue (Volume 7, Number 3, November 2009) that will explore any aspect of the longstanding and significant military relationship between Ireland and the Iberian world. Articles may focus on any aspect of the Irish military involvement in Spain, Portugal, Spanish America, Brazil, or the Caribbean across the centuries. Submissions could take the form of a study based on one particular person, the history of a battalion, a specific battle or event, discussion of military theory or strategy, procurement practices, recruitment efforts, relations between military and civilian authorities, or representations of the Irish overseas military experience in art, song or literature.

Articles in English should be submitted to the Guest Editor by 1 October 2009; articles in French, Spanish, German or Portuguese should be submitted by 1 September 2009. The editors also welcome book, film and website reviews, edited discussions of primary documents, photo essays, and short biographies related to the topic of the special issue. This is reminder that the deadline for applications to the Irish Latin American Research Fund is on Thursday, 30 April 2009.

The objective of the Irish Latin American Research Fund is to support innovative and significant research in the different aspects of relations between Ireland and Latin America.

Grants up to 1,000 Euros will be awarded to exceptionally promising students, faculty members or independent scholars to help support their research and writing leading to the publication or other types of communication of their projects. Awards will be selected on the basis of a well-developed research plan that promises to make a significant contribution to a particular area of study about the Irish and Latin America.

Three prestigious scholars will sit on this year's selection committee: Munira H. Mutran, Chair (University of São Paulo, Brazil), Aline Helg (University of Geneva, Switzerland), and Ronaldo Munck (Dublin City University). They will assess the research proposals and award grants to the best projects. The Irish Latin American Research Fund is open to faculty, advanced university students, and independent scholars throughout the world. Applicants from previous academic years who were not awarded a grant may apply again and submit the same project. Successful applicants must wait until two rounds of grants have passed before reapplying.

The programme receives no institutional funding and its only financial source is represented by membership fees and donations. These grants are possible thanks to the generosity of SILAS members and friends.

The most recent being Marine Robert McKibben RM. Who lost his life in Afghanistan in November last Year.

This is a very special occasion for the people of Mayo as we gather to officially open this beautiful Mayo Memorial Peace Park Garden of Remembrance. I am very grateful to Michael Feeney, the Chairman of the Mayo Peace Park Committee and instigator of the project for the invitation to be here.

This place is a simple gesture of respect and honoured memory for all those from Mayo who gave their lives in the unselfish service of others. Some gave service in the uniform of the Irish Army on service with the United Nations, while others wore the uniforms of other armies, the British Army, American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and indeed many others if we cast our minds back over the centuries of our complex history. Some of those who died were destined to be well-remembered. Others, particularly the fifty thousand or more who died in the Great War, were destined to have their memories consigned to shoe-boxes in attics until recent years, when a great longing for reconciliation allowed us to remember differently.

The opening of the Island of Ireland Peace Park in Messines in Belgium over a decade ago showcased this new mood and the opening of the Mayo Peace Park Garden of Remembrance consolidates it, ensuring that we will continue to remember differently, and in remembering all that appalling sacrifice, dedicate ourselves anew to building peace and closing the door forever on conflict.

This year we celebrate fifty years of Irish peacekeeping with the United Nations. The people of Ireland have taken enormous pride in the professional, tactful and compassionate way our defence forces provided protection and care of very troubled communities in conflict situations across the world. They have brought hope and dignity to so many anxious and endangered people and they have brought huge credit and international respect to their homeland. This small island with its embedded tradition of military neutrality has never shirked its responsibilities in the cause of world peace, and Mayo’s sons and daughters have made and continue to make their distinctive contribution.

Our first President Douglas Hyde kept the memory of the famous Mayo poet Anthony Rafferty alive when he gathered in his words from the oral tradition and collected them in writing for future generations. In his best known poem he wrote in rapturous terms about his Mayo home in words that could have been written of this day and this place:

“And if I were standing in the midst of my people, Age would leave me and I'd be young once more'

Almost all of those we commemorate here died young. They died wishing they could be back among their people. Here we bring their memories back among their people and they are indeed young once more.

We are a very fortunate generation that we can gather in commemoration of all those Irish men and women who gave their lives - whether it was for Irish freedom in successive uprisings over centuries of resistance to colonisation or whether it was in the many European uniforms in which the scattered Irish served for causes they felt passionate about, sometimes conflicting causes, whether it was in British, American, Australian, Canadian or New Zealand uniforms or whether in service with the UN. This is probably the first generation to be able to reconcile and revere all those memories.

Call for Papers

The time has come for SILAS to convene its first conference in the Americas. The Second SILAS Conference will be held in colonial Morelia, with the local support of the Instituto de Investigaciones Historicas at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo. Researchers, students and independent scholars will share their work and experience on different aspects of Irish-Latin American relations.

Under the general title "Heroes, victims or villains? Irish Presentations and Representations in Latin America and the Caribbean", this meeting proposes to foster international and multidisciplinary approaches to the study of connections between Ireland, Latin America, the Caribbean and Iberia.

SILAS was founded in July 2003 to promote the study of relations between Ireland and Latin America. The range of interests of the Society spans the settlement, lives and achievements of Irish migrants to Latin America and their descendants, the contemporary presence of Ireland in the life and culture of Latin America and the presence of Latin Americans in Ireland.

The Society invites papers on any aspect of Irish-Latin American links from scholars and students in disciplines such as humanities and social sciences, including for example history, literature, geography, politics, economy and the arts. The aim of the conference is to promote the exchange of views and research findings on a diverse range of issues and on an inter-disciplinary basis. This issue will explore the literary, artistic, and cultural interactions between Ireland and Latin America, Spain, and Portugal. This complex interplay has contributed towards the creation of a long-standing dialogue, a reciprocal cultural exchange which has fostered strong and enduring links, and has woven a tapestry in which we can observe the myriad figures, letters, and places that have emerged from the confluence of different languages, artistic expressions, and cultural spheres. Irish artists, writers, and philosophers have cast their powerful spell in the Latin American imagination, as well as in the Iberian Peninsula. Equally significant is the inverse phenomenon, whereby the Irish have looked onto the Hispanic world, Portugal, and Brazil as an inexhaustible source of inspiration and enrichment for a wide range of creative endeavours. Contributions will be drawn from the fields of fine arts, music, theatre, cinema, photography, literature, travel writing and the humanities. Inter-disciplinary studies are also welcome and should make further explorations, including Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese writers and artists settled and working in Ireland, Irish cultural diaspora, and aspects of teaching Irish Literature, Arts and Culture in Latin American countries and in the Iberian Peninsula. We also welcome book, exhibition, theatre and film reviews. Este libro está plagado de lenguaje soez y repugnante, referencias explícitas al sexo, a las partes íntimas, los excrementos, la flatulencia, la micción, la prostitución, y todo tipo de prácticas incalificables y actos antinaturales. Pero la buena noticia en todo esto es que, al fin podrá entenderse lo que se dice en la televisión.

Ahora el planeta tiene una cultura dominante, y el idioma de esta cultura es la obscenidad americana. La gente en todo el mundo ve a Clint Eastwood o Arnold Schwarzenegger agarrando al malo por la garganta y gritándole durante un minuto entero, y luego la traducción dice: "Lárgate. No me agradas." No somos tontos. Sabemos muy bien que estas no son sus palabras reales. Este libro explica lo que realmente dicen estos actores.

Pero este libro es mucho más que una mera lista de malas palabras: ubica estas palabras en la cultura, da ejemplos del cine, cuenta chistes, explica la letra de canciones conocidas, da citas famosas, ayuda con la pronunciación, advierte sobre lo que no debería decirse y cómo no hacer el ridículo. En otras palabras, muestra cómo los británicos y los norteamericanos ven el mundo, cómo funciona su cultura.

Este libro puede ser vil y pervertido, obsesionado y demente, pero nunca pornográfico. Es como la lista de ingredientes que se encuentra en la parte posterior de un frasco de salsa, le dice lo que Ud. y su familia está consumiendo. Explica la contaminación cultural que está inundando el planeta, la globalización de la obscenidad. Como dijo una vez Oscar Wilde: "Los libros que el mundo califica como inmorales son los libros que muestran al mundo su propia vergüenza."

Richard Manning, nacido en Dublín, Irlanda, en 1951, ha transcurrido la mayor parte de su vida en países distintos y lejanos como Egipto, el Reino Unido, Canadá, España, Brasil y Uruguay, lo que aporta un sentido cosmopolita a su personalidad y una vasta experiencia a su cultura. Su doble actividad de profesor y traductor del idioma inglés lo ha puesto en permanente contacto con la gente joven y sus formas de sentir y de expresarse.

Interesantísima propuesta crear un BANCO DE SANGRE VERDE, felicitaciones.... Bien, soy bisnieto de Thomas Harrison, llegado al Rio de la Plata alrededor de 1855 en compañía de un hermano mayor. El lugar de llegada fué Montevideo, su hermano mayor quedó en la R.O.U. y es lo único que sé, pero a sabiendas que el apellido Harrison existe en Uruguay y ha tenido un personaje famoso como lo fué el Escribano Don Faustino Harrison, intento pues averiguar si ambas familias tienen un tronco común, por esta sencilla razón me pongo en contacto con Uds. y rogaría me transmitan cualquier información al respecto para completar el arbol genealógico de mi familia, Gracias y los espero....

I don't know if I have any Irish ancestors, I doubt it. I've been living in Ireland for just over 5 years now. I was born in Uruguay and my family emigrated to Australia when I was 5 years old. I will be going back to Uruguay for the first time since I left, in November of 2008, almost 35 yrs later! For some reason I experience a connectedness to Uruguay while living in Ireland that I didn't expereince living in Australia. But one thing is for sure I'm interested in finding out my colourful ancestory, as I've been told that my great grandmother was a Moor indian, also I'm interested in following both my dad's family Juncal and my mum's Silva.

Para Miguel Ángel Colman Bauzá de Montevideo y Hugo Colman de Colonia.

Sin dudas el apellido Colman es de orígen irlandés.

Existen muchas variaciones del mismo : Colman, Coleman, O'Colman, MacColeman, McColeman, Coalman, Coulman, Colemen, Colmen, Coalmen, Colmin, Colmen, Coulmen, Coulmin, Colemin y otros.

La forma gaélica original del nombre Coleman es O Colmain, que significa "nieto de Colman" y el nombre Colman es derivado de la palabra "Colm," que significa "Paloma".

A continuación resumo un artículo que salió en la Revista No. 24 del Instituto de Estudios Genealógicos del Uruguay publicada en 2001, cuyo autor fue precisamente el entonces Presidente del Instituto (ahora fallecido), Ricardo Goldaracena. En dicha edición mi padre Ronald O'Neill y yo tuvimos el privilegio de participar en el capítulo dedicado a los inmigrantes de orígen irlandés en las llamadas "Primeras Jornadas Británicas de Genealogía y Heráldica" de noviembre de 2000.

El aventurero británico Nicholas Colman llegó al Río de la Plata con la expedición de Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca (1569) según escribió el cronista Ruy Díaz de Guzmán. Colman terminó sus agitados días de la Conquista en el Paraguay y fue el ascendiente de una antigua y distinguida familia del siglo XVIII de Villa Rica en tierra guaraní. De este mismo linaje proviene quien fuera uno de los ilustres 33 Orientales: Don Carmelo Colman (1801-1876), quien es recordado por el nombre de un importante camino de la periferia montevideana. Melchor Colman Notario vino del Paraguay y se casó con la pobladora Doña Margarita Burgues Carrasco el 12 de abril 1741 según el libro de Casados de la Iglesia Matriz y recibieron "un sitio", un cuarto de cuadra en la actual esquina de Cerrito y Juan Carlos Gómez. Tuvieron 5 hijas y dos varones: León Pascual y Jacinto. Jacinto se casó con Agustina Pérez Bravo y tuvieron entre otros a Carmelo Colman Pérez, integrante de la cruzada de los 33 Orientales. León Pascual se casó con María del Espíritu Santo Pérez Bravo, hermana de Agustina. Jacinto aún vivía con 76 años junto a su hijo Manuel en el paraje de Peñarol según el censo de 1836. En el mismo padrón figuran su otro hijo Felipe casado con Lucía Ortíz y su hija Fermina viuda de Marcelo Ortíz. El soldado de la Cruzada de 1825 y héroe del Sarandí Carmelo Colman se casó en 1841 con Juana Mallero. Tuvieron varios hijos:

Francisco casado con Benita Machado en 1883

Las ramificaciones de la familia serían muchas más pero incluimos solo las que transmitieron el apellido a las generaciones siguientes. Los Colman provenientes de la estirpe de aquel aventurero "adelantado", hace mucho tiempo que andan por estas tierras.

Of particular interest are recently-released books, films and websites that have a potential to make contributions to knowledge and understanding on any aspect of relations between Ireland and Latin America.
