- La Hora de la Tierra 2010 -
Sábado, 27 de marzo de 2010 de 20:30 a 21:30 hora local.
"La Hora de la Tierra" es un evento simbólico en el que la gente alrededor del mundo es animada para que apaguen sus luces por una hora, demostrando así su apoyo a las acciones que crean conciencia acerca del cambio climático. Millones de personas apagando sus luces juntas alrededor del planeta, demuestra que el esfuerzo individual, cuando es realizado conjuntamente, hace una gran diferencia y puede ser tan simple como apagar el interruptor o llave de luz.
"La Hora de la Tierra" comenzó en Sydney, Australia en 2007. Tuvo tanto éxito que en 2008, se convirtió en un evento global y este ha ido creciendo desde entonces.
En 2008, millones de personas en cientos de ciudades, en más de treinta países apagaron sus luces en "La Hora de la Tierra" y en 2009, más de 4,000 ciudades en 88 países participaron.

Los mas cálidos saludos de Navidad y Año Nuevo para todos, acá en Irlanda, y para nuestra familia irlandesa y para nuestros amigos diseminados en todo el mundo. Navidad es tiempo de reunión para la familia y de celebración para la comunidad y a pesar que el 2009 fue, desafortunadamente, un año de prueba para muchos, ha sido ciertamente un año en que la comunidad triunfó. Hacia el fin del año, Irlanda vio inundaciones que en una escala sin precedentes azotaron salvajemente hogares, granjas y negocios y muchas familias están aun soportando sus pérdidas y han evacuado sus lugares de residencia. Pero también hemos visto una inundación de un tipo diferente, una inundación de ayuda espontánea, de generosidad y de buena vecindad que aportaron la ayuda necesaria en abundancia y la esperanza a aquellos que estaba al borde de la desesperación.
El 2009 fue también un año en que se abrieron las puertas de una verdad suprimida para aquellos adultos que habían sido dañados por el abuso en su infancia. El poema "A un Niño" de Patrick Kavanagh, dice:
"Un niño es una luz en alguna parte
debajo de una estrella
a veces sera para ti
una ventana que mira
al interior de Dios"
Dos grandes informes mostraron a Irlanda desagradables hechos sobre confiables instituciones de la Iglesia y del Estado que pusieron el bienestar de los niños muy abajo en su escala de prioridades. Un vez más la comunidad se congregó solidariamente alrededor de aquellos heridos y dólidos y manifestó su determinación de construir un futuro diferente.
El shock económico del 2009 trajo pérdida de trabajo y problemas de dinero a muchos hogares, y también un malestar permanente. Históricamente gran número de personas se ha volcado a ayudar a las organizaciones comunitarias de base y de caridad. Aqui también hemos visto el carácter y la capacidad de recuperación de nuestro pueblo expresarse en el enorme incremento del voluntariado, que informaron las organizaciones comunitarias de base y en la respuesta del público a los pedidos de ayuda financiera para aquellos que la necesitaban.
Al acercarse el Año Nuevo tenemos la oportunidad de renovar nuestro país mediante nuestros esfuerzos individuales y como comunitarios, y unos a otros, como lo afirma Kavanagh en su poema "Esperanza":
Abril danzara sus danzas,
sobreviviremos
la esperanza se sostendra
El precioso don de la paz, una vez pensado sueño imposible, está creciendo notablemente y cambiando la faz de la isla, irradiando su poderoso mensaje de su posibilidad a muchas partes del mundo donde el conflicto destruye inecesariamente vidas. La prosperidad del los años del Tigre Celta ha dejado también sus marcas, algunas de temibles errores, pero en su mayoría esencialmente buenas, porque Irlanda se convirtió en una nación ambiciosa, confiada y con alto nivel de objetivos. Ahora es nuestra tarea consolidar la paz y restaurar una prudente y sustentable prosperidad. Ese trabajo, que es tarea de todos nosotros, traerá, a su tiempo, una marea de bienestar a nuestra gente. Esta es nuestra esperanza y nuestro ruego para el año que se acerca. Ojalá sea para cada uno de ustedes un año que los sorprenda de tal manera que eleve su corazon y sus esperanzas.

Warmest Christmas and New Year greetings to everyone here in Ireland and to our Irish family and friends who are scattered all over the world. Christmas is a time of gathering for family and community celebrations and though 2009 was a year that sorely tested many people, it was surely a year when community triumphed. Towards the end of the year, Ireland saw flooding on an unprecedented scale take its savage toll on homes, farms and businesses and many families are still coping with loss and displacement. Yet we also saw a flood of a different kind, a flood of spontaneous help, generosity and good neighbourliness that brought much needed support and hope to those who were close to despair.
2009 was also a year when the floodgates of suppressed truth opened for adults whose childhoods had been damaged by abuse. Patrick Kavanagh's poem To A Child says - "Child there is a light somewhere/ Under a star/ Sometime it will be for you/ a window that looks/ inward to God." Two major reports opened Ireland up to unpalatable facts about trusted institutions of Church and State which put children's welfare low on their scale of priority. Once again the community gathered in solidarity around those hurt and wounded and registered a determination that the future will be very different.
The economic shocks of 2009 brought job loss and money worries to a lot of homes as well as a pervasive malaise. Historically high numbers of people have turned for help to community based organisations and charities. Here too we have seen the character and resilience of our people express itself in the huge increase in volunteering reported by community organisations and in the response of the public to pleas for financial aid for those in need.
In the coming New Year we have the opportunity to renew our country by our efforts as individuals and as community to one another so that as Kavanagh says in his poem Hope, "April will dance in our heart's ballroom/ We shall survive/ hope will sustain."
The precious gift of peace once thought to be an impossible dream is quietly growing and changing the face of this island, radiating a powerful message of possibility to the many parts of the world where conflict wasted lives so needlessly. The prosperity of the Celtic Tiger years has also left its mark, some of it dreadfully chastening but much of it essentially good for it transformed Ireland into a high-achieving, ambitious and confident nation. Now it is our task to consolidate the peace and restore a sustainable, sensible prosperity. That work which is the job of all of us will, in time, bring a welcome flood-tide of good to our people. That is our hope and our prayer for the coming year. May it be for each one of you a year that surprises in ways that lift the heart and the hopes.

"Víspera de Todos los Santos"
La palabra Halloween es una derivación de la expresión "All Hallow’s Eve" (Víspera de Todos los Santos).
La historia del Halloween se remonta a hace más de 2.500 años, cuando el año celta terminaba al final del verano, en el hemisferio norte, precisamente el día 31 de octubre de nuestro calendario. El ganado era llevado de los prados a los establos para el invierno. Ese último día, se suponía que los espíritus podían salir de los cementerios y apoderarse de los cuerpos de los vivos para resucitar. Para evitarlo, los poblados celtas ensuciaban las casas y las “decoraban” con huesos, calaveras y demás cosas desagradables, de forma que los muertos pasaran de largo asustados. De ahí viene la tradición de decorar con motivos siniestros las casas en la actual víspera de todos los santos y también los disfraces. Es así pues una fiesta asociada a la venida de los dioses paganos a la vida.
Coincidentemente celebraciones de similares características en varias culturas más contemporáneas, se llevan a cabo por estas mismas fechas; ej: "Día de los Difuntos", el 2 de noviembre.

Equinoccio se denomina a los días del año que tienen igual duración que las noches, simultáneamente en ambos hemisferios de la Tierra. La palabra equinoccio proviene del latín “aequinoctium” y significa "noche igual".
En 2009 los equinoccios caen el 20 de marzo y el 22 de septiembre. En estas fechas los dos polos de la Tierra se encuentran a igual distancia del Sol y la luz solar da por igual en ambos hemisferios. En el equinoccio sucede el cambio de estación anual contraria en cada hemisferio.
Los celtas llamaban “Mabon” a este equinoccio del otoño norteño, por la reina celta de las hadas, Mab. A esta fecha los Druidas llamaban “Meán Fómhair” (“cosecha media” o “setiembre” en irlandés), y honraban al Dios del Bosque. Esta festividad representaba la cosecha, la madre tierra dando a sus hijos los elementos necesarios para sobrevivir el invierno por venir.

Origen del Café Irlandés
El Café Irlandés aunque conocido en todo el mundo, de hecho es una bebida reciente. Cuando se reanudaron los viajes aéreos después de la II Guerra Mundial, los aviones que operaban ese servicio hacían escala para repostar en el aeropuerto de Shannon en la costa oeste de Irlanda.
Joe Sheridan el chef en Shannon en aquel tiempo tomó una bebida tradicional irlandesa (Hot Irish), sustituyó el té por café, y lo decoró con una capa de nata fresca, dando nacimiento al Irish Coffee.
Debido a que el Aeropuerto de Shannon era el lugar de paso entre el Este y el Oeste, la receta de Joe Sheridan se dio a conocer por todo el mundo.

El Bloomsday es un evento anual que se celebra en honor a Leopold Bloom, personaje principal de la novela Ulises de James Joyce. Se celebra todos los 16 de junio desde 1954.
El 16 de junio es el día en el que transcurre la acción -ficticia- del Ulises. Este día los celebrantes procuran comer y cenar lo mismo que los protagonistas de la obra, o realizar distintos actos que tengan su paralelismo en la novela. Especialmente se realizan encuentros en Dublín para seguir el itinerario exacto de la acción.

El martes 16 de junio a las 19hs se realizará en el Salón Dorado de la Municipalidad, la presentación del Bloomsday en Buenos Aires.
Personalidades de la cultura local harán lectura de un capítulo del Ulises, de James Joyce, considerada una de las mejores novelas del siglo XX. Los lectores serán la locutora y ahora diputada Lidia Satragno (Pinky); la Prof. María Kodama, presidenta de la Fundación Borges; y Pacho O´Donnell, escritor y psiquiatra. Presentará Carlos Gamerro.
Organiza la Embajada de Irlanda, la Asociación Argentino Irlandesa de Capital Federal y el Gobierno de la Ciudad.

Bloomsday, literalmente “el día de Bloom”, recrea la jornada del 16 de junio en la novela del reconocido escritor irlandés: representaciones en las calles, paseos guiados, lecturas colectivas.
El Ulises es, sin lugar a dudas, una de las obras emblemáticas del siglo XX.

James Joyce (Dublín, 1882 – Zúrich, 1941) fue un escritor irlandés, recordado mundialmente como uno de los más importantes e influyentes del siglo XX.
Es aclamado por su obra maestra, Ulises (1922).
Uno de sus cuentos vincula a Dublín con Buenos Aires (“Evelyn” en Dublinenses): una joven irlandesa abandona la idea de partir con un marinero que viene a esa ciudad.
Jorge Luis Borges escribió: “Es indiscutible que Joyce es uno de los primeros escritores de nuestro tiempo. Verbalmente, es quizá el primero. En el Ulises hay sentencias, hay párrafos, que no son inferiores a los más ilustres de Shakespeare…”

The editors of Irish Migration Studies in Latin America invite submissions for a special issue (Volume 7, Number 3, November 2009) that will explore any aspect of the longstanding and significant military relationship between Ireland and the Iberian world. Articles may focus on any aspect of the Irish military involvement in Spain, Portugal, Spanish America, Brazil, or the Caribbean across the centuries. Submissions could take the form of a study based on one particular person, the history of a battalion, a specific battle or event, discussion of military theory or strategy, procurement practices, recruitment efforts, relations between military and civilian authorities, or representations of the Irish overseas military experience in art, song or literature.
Articles in English should be submitted to the Guest Editor by 1 October 2009; articles in French, Spanish, German or Portuguese should be submitted by 1 September 2009. The editors also welcome book, film and website reviews, edited discussions of primary documents, photo essays, and short biographies related to the topic of the special issue. This is reminder that the deadline for applications to the Irish Latin American Research Fund is on Thursday, 30 April 2009.
The objective of the Irish Latin American Research Fund is to support innovative and significant research in the different aspects of relations between Ireland and Latin America.
Grants up to 1,000 Euros will be awarded to exceptionally promising students, faculty members or independent scholars to help support their research and writing leading to the publication or other types of communication of their projects. Awards will be selected on the basis of a well-developed research plan that promises to make a significant contribution to a particular area of study about the Irish and Latin America.
Three prestigious scholars will sit on this year's selection committee: Munira H. Mutran, Chair (University of São Paulo, Brazil), Aline Helg (University of Geneva, Switzerland), and Ronaldo Munck (Dublin City University). They will assess the research proposals and award grants to the best projects. The Irish Latin American Research Fund is open to faculty, advanced university students, and independent scholars throughout the world. Applicants from previous academic years who were not awarded a grant may apply again and submit the same project. Successful applicants must wait until two rounds of grants have passed before reapplying.
The programme receives no institutional funding and its only financial source is represented by membership fees and donations. These grants are possible thanks to the generosity of SILAS members and friends.

Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Martin Coyle I undertake voluntary Research for the Mayo Memorial. It is a non political non sectarian project. Our aim is to find and Remember all County Mayo Personnel who have lost there lives in conflict anywhere in the World, no matter what uniform they wore or traditions they followed from the Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force, Merchant Navy, Medical Staff, Clergy and Civilians who were from County Mayo Republic of Ireland. The Website is

The Memorial was opened by the President of Ireland Mary McAlesee in October 2008 it contains the names of 1,114 to Date. We believe there are some names which have being Forgotten and they need to be added to the Memorial Wall so we are asking all Groups and Organisations to forward there names to this site they will be added in due course. The most recent being Marine Robert McKibben RM. Who lost his life in Afghanistan in November last Year.

This is a very special occasion for the people of Mayo as we gather to officially open this beautiful Mayo Memorial Peace Park Garden of Remembrance. I am very grateful to Michael Feeney, the Chairman of the Mayo Peace Park Committee and instigator of the project for the invitation to be here.
This place is a simple gesture of respect and honoured memory for all those from Mayo who gave their lives in the unselfish service of others. Some gave service in the uniform of the Irish Army on service with the United Nations, while others wore the uniforms of other armies, the British Army, American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and indeed many others if we cast our minds back over the centuries of our complex history. Some of those who died were destined to be well-remembered. Others, particularly the fifty thousand or more who died in the Great War, were destined to have their memories consigned to shoe-boxes in attics until recent years, when a great longing for reconciliation allowed us to remember differently.
The opening of the Island of Ireland Peace Park in Messines in Belgium over a decade ago showcased this new mood and the opening of the Mayo Peace Park Garden of Remembrance consolidates it, ensuring that we will continue to remember differently, and in remembering all that appalling sacrifice, dedicate ourselves anew to building peace and closing the door forever on conflict.
This year we celebrate fifty years of Irish peacekeeping with the United Nations. The people of Ireland have taken enormous pride in the professional, tactful and compassionate way our defence forces provided protection and care of very troubled communities in conflict situations across the world. They have brought hope and dignity to so many anxious and endangered people and they have brought huge credit and international respect to their homeland. This small island with its embedded tradition of military neutrality has never shirked its responsibilities in the cause of world peace, and Mayo’s sons and daughters have made and continue to make their distinctive contribution.
Our first President Douglas Hyde kept the memory of the famous Mayo poet Anthony Rafferty alive when he gathered in his words from the oral tradition and collected them in writing for future generations. In his best known poem he wrote in rapturous terms about his Mayo home in words that could have been written of this day and this place:
“And if I were standing in the midst of my people, Age would leave me and I'd be young once more'
Almost all of those we commemorate here died young. They died wishing they could be back among their people. Here we bring their memories back among their people and they are indeed young once more.
We are a very fortunate generation that we can gather in commemoration of all those Irish men and women who gave their lives - whether it was for Irish freedom in successive uprisings over centuries of resistance to colonisation or whether it was in the many European uniforms in which the scattered Irish served for causes they felt passionate about, sometimes conflicting causes, whether it was in British, American, Australian, Canadian or New Zealand uniforms or whether in service with the UN. This is probably the first generation to be able to reconcile and revere all those memories.

Le damos la bienvenida al Ingeniero Civil William Russell Coleman Molina, nacido en la Comunidad de Santa Isabel Rio Coco Waspam, que se nos ha escrito desde la Ciudad de Bilwi en Nicaragua.
William es descendiente de Charles Coleman y nos envía el siguiente comentario:
"Bueno somos una familia numerosa que vivimos en una zona de Nicaragua mi antepasado o sea mi bis abuelo era ingles y es posible que sea de Irlanda ya que tenemos muchos rasgos el se llamaba Charles Coleman supuestamente era Biologo vivió en una comarca que llama San Ramon ahi está todavia lo que le pertenecia el era un hombre pudiente que acopiaba oro y tenia cafetales, el tuvo seis hijos varones (Izagueri, Charles, Jack, Detrick, Nestor, Body y dos mujeres Bessy y Jessy entonces los nietos hemos estado buscando a nuestra familia en Inglaterra y atraves de la embajada nos gustaria que nos contactara para comunicarnos ya que tenemos muchas cosas que contar sobre nuestra familia."

SILAS - Call for Grants Proposals

The Society for Irish Latin American Studies is pleased to announce the launch of a new edition of its grants programme, the "Irish Latin American Research Fund". The objective of the Irish Latin American Research Fund is to support innovative and significant research in the different aspects of relations between Ireland and Latin America.
Grants up to 1,000 Euros will be awarded to exceptionally promising students, faculty members or independent scholars to help support their research and writing leading to the publication or other types of communication of their projects. Awards will be selected on the basis of a well-developed research plan that promises to make a significant contribution to a particular area of study about the Irish and Latin America.
Three prestigious scholars will sit on this year's selection committee: Munira H. Mutran, Chair (University of Sao Paulo, Brazil), Aline Helg (University of Geneva, Switzerland), and Ronaldo Munck (Dublin City University, Ireland). They will assess the research proposals and award grants to the best projects. The Irish Latin American Research Fund is open to faculty, advanced university students, and independent scholars throughout the world. Applicants from previous academic years who were not awarded a grant may apply again and submit the same project. Successful applicants must wait until two rounds of grants have passed before reapplying.
